featured watch 1

June 13, 2008 – 5:27 pm
If you know me, then you know I like to talk about watches.  I also like to collect them and currently own nine different watches.  One of the more unusual ones I own is a Swiss made digital watch from Ventura called the v-tec delta.  Ventura went out of business recently, so I imagine my watch will go up in value since you can't buy it anymore. I do not buy watches to hold and sell, so even if it were worth 10X what I paid, I wouldn't part with it. This watch has a lot of features that really made me have to have it.  Unlike most digital displays, this one has a unique font developed by the company and each numeric value is comprised of 13 elements (vs the more usual 7).  It has a scroll wheel (Ventura calls it EasySkroll) that is used to navigate through the various ...

new redhatbluehat podcast (4)

June 13, 2008 – 10:05 am
I was out last Thurdsay for some minor surgery but was back in the saddle for this week's podcast.  Most of the discussion revolved around Obama and McCain, the war on terror, taxes and the budget this week.  I also mentioned that I was rethinking my choice for president and possibly switching to McCain. You can listen to it below or click over to GeekCast.  I hope you enjoy it.

cuts like a knife but it feels so right…

June 9, 2008 – 12:37 pm
Last Thursday, I went under the knife to have my left submandibular saliva gland removed (the one under my left jaw bone).  It had a huge stone in it and had stopped working years ago.  Needless to say, that wasn't the best way to spend a Thursday.  On Friday I went for a post-op check-up and the doctor commented that in all his 35 years of doing this, mine was one of the biggest. Friday and Saturday provided the most discomfort with steady improvement through to today.  I get my stitches out this coming Friday which should be tons-o-fun.  The soon to be scar is under my jaw - maybe 2 - 3 inches long.  I posted a pic for those who want all the gory details below (it is reversed so it looks like it is on my right side - but it isn't).  The healing wound makes it difficult ...

iphone rumors

June 2, 2008 – 9:42 am
OK- the hype is building with the second coming of the jesus phone a few days or weeks away.  There are no shortages of rumors on the new iphone - but I thought I would knit together my favorties here.  I currently use a Blackberry Curve on AT&T (prior to that I had a BB 8800).  I didn't buy the first gen iphone mainly because it didn't have GPS.  I am excited about the rumors that the second gen iphone will have GPS.  I really want to buy one but need to it have a few new features first.  If it were up to me, here is what I would want in the new iphone. GPS - once you have it, you can't go back 3G - the iphone's multimedia capabilities are crying for faster data transfer More powerful CPU that uses less power - everyone loves a new processor 32GB hard drive - ...

motorcycle track day

May 29, 2008 – 11:40 am
Over this past Memorial Day weekend, I went to Willow Springs Raceway near Edwards Air Force Base for a track day run by Hyper Cycle.  A track day allows you to bring a motorcycle to the racetrack and ride it as fast as you dare.  The cost is only $150, plus the cost of gas and tire wear. In order to participate, you need to tape over your headlight, blinkers and tail light and remove or tape over the mirrors.  This is required in case you crash, you don't scatter small shards of glass and plastic all over the track.  Last weekend, I rode my 1999 Kawasaki ZRX 1100 along with about 10 other fellow ZRXOA members. There are three levels based on rider skill: street, intermediate and advanced - I was in the intermediate group since I had taken the first two levels of Keith Code's Superbike School.  Each group goes ...

political podcast

May 15, 2008 – 3:29 pm
Sam Harrelson started a new political podcast over at Geekcast.fm called RedHatBlueHat and invited me to participate on the first episode. There were some issues with the sound quality but the discussion went well. Take a listen and leave a comment. Thanks!
